2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD

The Sportage is a top seller for Kia, and for 2026, this compact SUV gets refreshed and is available in gas-powered, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. The Hybrid is a good blend of performance, practicality, refinement and efficiency with a spacious and upscale cabin. It’s a compelling offering in the growing hybrid SUV category.

Base Price: $40,390
As Tested: $41,985
Horsepower: 232
Mileage: 35 mpg city/36 mpg highway/35 mpg combined

The Sportage Hybrid was introduced in the U.S. for the 2023 model year. For 2026, all versions get a mid-cycle refresh with an updated front grille, sharper lines, a new dual-screen panoramic display, standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and additional driver assistance tech. The Sportage Hybrid gets a small power boost and the sporty S and rugged X-Line trims are added to the lineup.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid comes in five trims: LX, S, EX, X-Line and SX-Prestige. Starting prices range from $30,290 to $40,390. These are lower than many competitors. There’s room for five passengers in two rows of seating.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the LX trim, and all-wheel drive is standard on all of the higher trims.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. Total output is 232 horsepower, which is five more hp than the previous model, and 271 pound-feet of torque. While many rivals have continuously variable transmissions, the Sportage Hybrid has a six-speed automatic. This makes for a quieter ride without the buzzing that’s often noticeable with CVTs.

The ride is smooth and refined, but there’s still some decent pep. Throttle response is brisk and acceleration is quick, whether you’re speeding up from a stop or merging and passing on the highway. The steering has a nice feel, and the Sportage Hybrid stays planted when cornering. Brakes are responsive without the squishiness of some other regenerative braking systems while still sending energy back to the battery pack. The suspension does an admirable job of absorbing most bumps from potholes and rough roads.

Fuel economy is great in the LX with front-wheel drive, and just ok for the rest of the trims that come standard with all-wheel drive. EPA ratings for front-wheel drive model are 41 mpg city and 44 mpg highway with a combined rating of 42. AWD models slip to 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. I got 35 mpg with my AWD tester during my week with a mix of highway and city driving.

When properly equipped, the Sportage Hybrid can tow up to 2,000 which is good for a compact hybrid SUV.

The interior has a more expensive feel than the price point would suggest. The cabin is upscale and spacious with quality materials, many of which are soft-touch, and comes with a wealth of standard features and tech. Front seats are supportive and comfortable, even on long hauls. Legroom is generous in both rows, and headroom is good up front but taller passengers may wish for more headroom in the second row. A large 12.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster stretch across the dash.

Standard features include push-button start, rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, six-way manual adjustable driver’s seat, four-way manual adjustable front passenger seat, reclining rear seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, Infotainment system with 12.3-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD radio, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, USB-C ports, 12V power outlet, automatic high-beam headlights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Available features include remote start, Kia’s Digital key 2.0 Premium (provides keyless entry and lets you share your keys with others), surround-view camera system, head-up display, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, ventilated front seats, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support, eight-way power adjustable passenger’s seat, memory system for driver’s seat and outside mirrors, heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon premium audio system, navigation, voice recognition, Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, additional USB-C ports, LED interior lighting, panoramic sunroof with power shade, and black roof rails.

Standard driver assistance technologies include forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, driver attention monitoring, and rear-seat alert.

Available driver assistance technologies include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot camera system that shows video feed of blind spot when you engage a turn signal, reverse automatic emergency braking, side parking sensors, safe exit assist (doors won’t open if another vehicle is approaching from behind), and remote smart parking assist (lets you park the vehicle remotely by using the key fob).

The infotainment system looks great with its large 12.3-inch screen. Graphics look sharp and the system responds quickly to inputs. The audio and climate controls, though, are persnickety. These controls are integrated into one touch-sensitive panel, and it can be confusing and distracting to make adjustments. Honestly, this is one of the only negatives for the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid.

Cargo space is excellent for the class. There are 39.5 cubic feet with both rows in place and an impressive 73.7 cubes with the second row folded. A handy two-level cargo floor provides some additional space. Lower it to fit large items, or raise it to make a large flat surface that’s at the same height as the rear seats.  The rear seats split 60/40. A hands-free power liftgate is available.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid has Kia’s excellent warranty: a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The good:

Relatively low starting price

Great value for the money

Pleasant driving dynamics

Smooth ride

Upscale cabin

Many standard and available features and tech

Standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The not-so-good:

Fuel economy just ok for AWD models

Persnickety audio and climate controls

Pricing info:

My SX-Prestige tester starts at $40,390. All-weather floor mats are $200. The destination fee is $1,395, bringing the grand total to $41,985.

Bottom line:

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is a top offering among hybrid SUVs with its pleasant driving dynamics, smooth ride, upscale and spacious cabin, and long list of standard and available features. Plus, it offers great value for the money with relatively low starting prices. The only drawbacks are that while fuel efficiency is excellent with front-wheel drive, AWD models are just average. And there are the distracting audio and climate controls. Otherwise, the 2026 Kia Sportage is a terrific choice.
