The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is Subaru’s best effort yet to make a fuel-efficient crossover without compromising the all-weather capability, rugged personality and affordability that has made the Crosstrek one of Subaru’s top-selling models.

Previous hybrid models of Subaru’s smallest crossover didn’t quite hit the mark. The first hybrid from 2014 to 2016 only had small increases in efficiency, while the plug-in hybrid from 2019 to 2023 had a limited electric range and less cargo space. For 2026, Subaru gives the Crosstrek a brand new hybrid system that delivers better fuel economy, drivability and practicality.
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is available in two trims: Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid. Starting prices are $33,995 and $34,995, respectively. The regular gas-powered Crosstrek comes in five trims, but the Hybrid trims come with more standard features. Subaru’s excellent symmetrical all-wheel drive system is standard on all models.
There’s room for five passengers in two rows of seating.
Both Hybrid trims get the same powertrain: a 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a lithium-ion battery pack. Total output is 194 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. That’s a noticeable power boost over the regular Crosstrek which has 180 horses and 178 pound-feet. The Crosstrek Hybrid and regular Crosstrek both have continuously variable automatic transmissions.
The Crosstrek Hybrid is peppier than its gas-powered sibling. Power delivery is smooth, and the electric motors provide low-speed torque for city driving and highway merging and passing – you don’t have to plan ahead as much for these moves as in older Crosstreks. The CVT has mixed performance. While it helps maximize efficiency, it also allows the engine to drone loudly under hard acceleration. Ride quality is excellent for a subcompact crossover. Steering is light, making it easy to corner and park. The suspension absorbs broken pavement and potholes with ease. All in all, the Crosstrek Hybrid is pleasant to drive with decent performance, prioritizing comfort and confidence over driver engagement, which is what you expect in a Subaru.
Where the Crosstrek Hybrid excels over many rivals is in its off-road capabilities. Every Crosstrek Hybrid has 8.7 inches of ground clearance and comes standard with X-MODE Dual Mode System with Hill Descent Control, an advanced software-driven traction control system integrated with the AWD system to maximize grip on surfaces such as snow, mud, dirt and steep hills. This makes the Crosstrek Hybrid ready for camping, skiing, hiking, and other outdoor adventures.
Fuel economy is lower than some hybrid rivals, but the Crosstrek Hybrid has standard AWD. EPA ratings are 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 36 mpg combined. I got 37 mpg during my week with a mix of city and highway driving.
When properly equipped, the Crosstrek Hybrid can tow up to 1,500 pounds, same as the gas-powered model.
The cabin is practical and functional. Material quality is decent but not as upscale as in some rivals. There’s plenty of hard black and grey plastic surfaces, but that’s not uncommon at this price point and makes the interior easy to clean after an outdoor adventure. Front seats are comfortable and supportive even on long drives. Passenger space is competitive for a subcompact SUV, especially in the front row. Adults have good leg- and headroom up front. The second row accommodates a couple average-size adults, but it’s tight for taller folks.
A standard 12.3-inch digital driver display and 11.6-inch vertically-oriented infotainment system dominate the dash. Unfortunately, the infotainment system feels dated when compared to the latest offerings from Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, and other carmakers in terms of responsiveness and functionality. The system can be slow to respond to touch and voice commands, and the screen looks cluttered with all of the icons. There are physical controls for volume and some climate settings, but you have to go through the touchscreen for other functions. The system includes navigation, but you’ll probably want to use your phone as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.
The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid has less cargo space than its gas-powered sibling and some hybrid competitors There are 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and up to 50.6 cubes with the second row folded. The cabin has small door pockets and a compact center console for stashing small items.

It’s worth nothing that while the Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is excellent, it does produce frequent beeps and warnings which can be annoying to some drivers. Drivers do have the option to lower the chime volume for many EyeSight features if the beeping is bothersome.

Bottom line:
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a practical and affordable little SUV and is arguably Subaru’s best hybrid crossover. It’s not a segment leader when it comes to tech, luxury, performance, or cargo space, but the Crosstrek Hybrid is a well-rounded mix of efficiency, capability and safety. It’s an excellent choice for drivers who want to have an easy daily driver, explore the great outdoors, drive safely in wet or snowy weather, and get good gas mileage.
