The 2023 Genesis G90 is a stunner inside and out. This impressive large sedan from Hyundai’s upscale brand has everything you’d want in a luxury vehicle including lively performance, a cushy ride, top notch materials, and a long list of standard features and tech. While the price is higher than previous models, it’s still a relative bargain compared to similar luxury vehicles and comes loaded with more amenities.
Base Price: $98,700
As Tested: $100,370
Horsepower: 409
Mileage: 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined
The Genesis brand branched off from Hyundai in 2015. The G90 was introduced in the U.S. market for the 2017 model year. For 2023, the brand’s flagship sedan gets fully redesigned.
The 2023 G90 comes in two trims: 3.5T and 3.5T E-Supercharger. Starting prices are $88,400 and $98,700, respectively. All-wheel drive is standard on both trims. There’s room for five passengers.
Two engines are available. The 3.5T is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The E-Supercharger gets a twin-turbo V6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an electric supercharger with a combined output of 409 horses and 405 pound-feet. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Both engines provide plenty of power for quick acceleration from a stop and merging and passing at freeway speeds. The E-Supercharger feels smooth and effortless when you press the accelerator, and the eight-speed smoothly finds the right gear. The suspension soaks up bumps and rough roads. Steering is responsive and the G90 stays planted around sharp turns. All in all, the G90 is extremely pleasant to drive!
Fuel economy is below average for a large luxury car. EPA ratings for my tester are 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway with a combined rating of 20. I got 20 mpg during my week with a mix of city and highway driving.
The roomy cabin is posh and stylish. Materials are upscale including leather and wood and metal trim. Everything has a quality look and feel, and every stitch is in place. Both rows boast good leg- and headroom for adults. Seats in both rows are supportive and comfortable. Front seats have a massage setting, allowing for a little pampering when driving to and from work!
Standard features include proximity keyless entry, remote start, rearview camera, surround-view camera system, head-up display, tri-zone automatic climate control, Nappa leather upholstery, suede headliner, heated steering wheel, leather-wrapped and power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, 22-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 16-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, front seat and steering wheel memory settings, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, infotainment system with 12.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bang & Olufsen audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, ambient interior lighting, power soft-closing doors, power rear-window sunshades, automatic high-beam headlights, panoramic sunroof, and the Genesis Digital Key that lets you use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle, and you can also share the digital key with up to three people.
Available features include an upgraded Bang and Olufsen audio system and air suspension.
Standard driver assistance technologies include forward collision warning, forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, highway driving assist,
blind-spot monitoring, blind-spot camera, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-trace assist, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist, front and rear parking sensors, driver-attention monitoring, rear-seat alert, and safe exit assist which alerts anyone exiting the G90 if another vehicle is approaching from behind.
The infotainment system looks great with its large screen and sharp graphics. The system responds quickly to touch and voice commands, and physical buttons and knobs make it easy to adjust common functions. Although Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, a cord is required to make the connection, unlike many luxury cars which now offer wireless connectivity.
Trunk space is good for the class at 15.7 cubic feet. A hands-free power trunk lid is standard.
The good:
Stylish inside and out
Lively handling
Cushy ride
Posh cabin loaded with features and tech
User-friendly infotainment system
Standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
The not-so-good:
Below average fuel economy
No wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Pricing info:
My tester starts at $98,700. Savile Silver paint is $575. Destination fee is $1,095 bringing the grand total to $100,370.
Bottom line:
Move over Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The 2023 Genesis G90 delivers what you expect in a luxury sedan including beautiful styling inside and out, two powerful engines, a silky-smooth ride, and a plethora of standard features and tech. And it’s offered at a lower price than competitors. The only drawbacks are below average fuel economy and no wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Otherwise, the G90 is sure worth consideration.
