BOISE – It sounds like something out of a disaster movie – millions of crickets and cicadas traveling in huge swarms and gathering on roads across the West, including here in Idaho. But it can be a common occurrence this time of year, and AAA is sharing tips to stay safe and keep your vehicle in good repair.
“If you’ve never seen it in person, there’s nothing quite like it. You drive around a corner or over a bend, and suddenly, the road looks like it’s alive,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “It’s an amazing sight, and for some people, it can be a little disconcerting. Fortunately, with just a few basic precautions, neither you nor your vehicle will be the worse for wear.”
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Make sure wiper blades are in good condition and washer fluid reservoir is full to help clear away bugs.
- Wash your car frequently and apply a good coat of wax to combat the acidity level of the bugs.
- Periodically check your air filter (under the hood) and cabin air filter (inside the vehicle) to make sure they aren’t clogged.
- If your temperature gauge is higher than normal, have it checked for any blockages, including from insects.
“If you encounter a swarm, remember to drive slow and easy, and avoid sharp turns whenever possible,” Conde said. “As larger crickets get squished, they can make the road pretty slick in places. Having good tires with deep tread can help alleviate some of those issues.”
