BOISE – It’s the happiest season of all, and this week, many Idaho families will head out in search of the perfect Christmas tree. To keep the season merry and bright, AAA is offering some tips to safely get your tree home.
“In previous AAA research, 60% of respondents had a tree fall off or out of their vehicle before,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “To borrow from a popular song, when you tie down your tree, make sure you check it twice.”
Safely transporting a tree
- Net the tree at the lot.
- Cover your vehicle’s roof with a blanket to protect the paint. A truck or a minivan with the back seats removed will work best.
- Use strong rope, bungee cords or tiedowns, not cheap twine.
- Secure the tree at the top, bottom, and center, with the trunk facing forward. Tug from several directions to make sure it doesn’t move.
- Use back roads where possible to travel at lower speeds.
“When you get your tree home and in place, remember to keep it hydrated. Additives in your tree stand’s water can also help your tree stay fresh all season,” Conde said. “Never leave Christmas lights or candles unattended, especially if you’re turning in for the night.”
