BOISE – Snowy weather and icy roads are making driving a bit more challenging these days, and AAA is sharing tips to help you safely reach your destination.

“If it’s been a while since you’ve driven on snow and ice, consider practicing in a large parking lot, away from other vehicles,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  “Getting a feel for how your car will respond to freezing conditions may help prevent a serious crash this winter.”

AAA’s winter driving advice

  • Check road and weather conditions before and during long trips.  Even if you’re confident driving in winter weather, consider the skill level of drivers around you.
  • Remove snow and ice that could block visibility for you and others, including on your roof, hood, windows, and headlights and brake lights.
  • Don’t use hot water to melt ice – it could cause thermal shock that may crack your windshield.
  • Watch for ice on curves, hills, bridges, and shaded areas of the road.
  • Don’t blindly follow your GPS.  If a road doesn’t look maintained, delay or adjust your route.
  • Dress in layers for freedom of movement.  Avoid bulky coats behind the wheel.
  • Double or triple your following distance (6-9 seconds from the car in front of you).
  • Watch for sliding vehicles, brake lights, and road debris.

“Another aspect of safe winter driving is traction control.  Winter tires or tire chains can make a big difference,” Conde said.  “Avoid sudden acceleration, braking, and sharp turns, and if you start to slide, focus on steering over braking.”
