BOISE – Seven is usually a lucky number, but not for Idaho drivers this week. According to AAA, today’s average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the Gem State is $4.42, which is seven cents more than a week ago, 37 cents more than a month ago, and an astonishing 91 cents more than a year ago.
Drivers in the Treasure Valley and up in the Panhandle are really feeling the pinch, with pump prices in Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston soaring by 14 cents, ten cents, and 20 cents respectively.
The national average currently sits at $4.06 per gallon, which is six cents more than a week ago, eight cents more than a month ago, and 93 cents more than a year ago. For another week, Idaho ranks 7th in the country for the most expensive fuel.
“A jittery crude oil market is applying upward pressure on gas prices in Idaho and across the nation, with no immediate fix in sight on the supply side,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “But if fuel demand goes down with more kids back in school, things could improve.”
AAA notes that ongoing tensions in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine are creating market uncertainty. The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is trading near $83 per barrel – about $1 more than a month ago – with peaks and valleys of $92 and $75 since mid-July.
“We are still in the heart of hurricane season, and gasoline refineries will soon make the switch to the cheaper-to-produce winter-blend fuel,” Conde said. “Any unplanned downtime for repairs and maintenance could spell trouble, so we’ll be watching closely in the coming weeks.”
