BOISE – Drivers across the nation, including here in Idaho, continue to reel from the effects of higher gas prices.
According to AAA, today’s average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Gem State is $4.62, which is about two cents higher than a week ago, but 27 cents more than a month ago and $1.16 more than a year ago.
The national average currently sits at $4.15 per gallon, which is six cents more than a week ago, 13 cents more than a month ago, and 96 cents more than a year ago. Once again, Idaho ranks 7th this week for the most expensive gasoline.
“In a typical year, you would expect a large drop in gasoline prices soon after Labor Day. People stay closer to home, and the winter-blend fuel is cheaper to make,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “This year is anything but typical. Far from it.”
Ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the Ukraine are putting significant pressure on the crude oil market. The West Texas Intermediate is currently trading near $92 per barrel. That’s about $10 more than a month ago and $30 more per barrel than a year ago.
“As long as market fears persist, crude oil prices will be jittery,” Conde said. “And that can have a pronounced impact on everything from delivery charges to jet fuel. Fingers crossed that tensions ease before the busy Thanksgiving travel holiday.”
