BOISE – The school year is starting in parts of the Gem State, and it’s a timely reminder for drivers to be extra careful in places where children are present.

“Students are antsy about everything from making friends to finding their lockers.  We can give them and their parents some peace of mind by practicing safe driving habits,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  “It may be safer and more efficient to choose a different route for your commute that keeps you away from school zones, bus stops, and residential neighborhoods where possible.”

AAA’s Back to School Tips

  • Watch for children darting between cars.
  • Slow down, and keep your eyes and attention on the road.
  • Build in extra time for your commute so that you aren’t tempted to drive at unsafe speeds.
  • Follow directions from crossing guards.
  • Never overtake a stopped school bus with flashing lights.  It’s dangerous and illegal.
  • Remind your teen driver to avoid risky behavior behind the wheel.

“Every year, a new group of kids learns the ropes for the first time,” Conde said.  “As drivers, we have much more life experience – and the responsibility ultimately falls to us to ensure that kids are protected and able to concentrate on learning.”
