As the seasons change, your car faces new challenges on the road. Cooler weather, falling leaves, rain, and eventually snow can all take a toll on your vehicle. Taking a proactive approach now ensures you’ll be ready for whatever autumn and winter throw your way.

Check Your Tires

Your tires are your car’s only point of contact with the road, so they deserve extra attention. Inspect tread depth—if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head on a penny, it’s time to replace them. Bald or worn tires make it harder to stop in wet conditions and increase the risk of hydroplaning. Consider switching to winter tires if you live in an area with snow and ice; their special rubber compound and deeper tread provide much better traction in cold conditions.

Also, check your tire pressure. Air contracts in cooler temperatures, which can leave your tires underinflated. Driving with the proper pressure improves fuel economy, handling, and safety.

AAA members enjoy free inflation checks, tire inspections, tire repair, rotation and rebalancing at Discount Tire. Plus, if you need new tires, save $10 on each ‘Better’ or ‘Best’ brand of tire.

Replace Wipers & Top Off Fluids

Visibility is critical, especially with fall rains and shorter days. Replace worn wiper blades before they start streaking, and keep your washer fluid topped off with a winter blend that won’t freeze.

Now is also the time to check all your fluids—engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Fresh antifreeze keeps your engine from overheating and protects against freezing, while clean oil helps your engine perform efficiently in colder weather.

For the month of October, AAA members save 20% off Rain-X® wiper blades with NAPA Auto Parts. Plus, save 10% on vehicle fluids and accessories.

Don’t Forget The Battery

Cold weather is hard on batteries. A weak battery that works fine in September could leave you stranded in December. Have your battery tested and replace it if it’s showing signs of weakness, such as slow cranking or dim headlights.

AAA offers a few battery solutions for members. Schedule Mobile Battery Service, visit a AAA Battery Service Center or pick up a AAA Premium Battery from your local NAPA Auto Parts Store.
