As the coronavirus COVID-19 continues to unfold, its impact on the insurance industry is coming into focus. Social distancing, travel restrictions, cancelled events, and more people working from home mean fewer drivers are out on the road. This has led to fewer automobile accidents, which has meant fewer insurance claims.

Now, many insurance companies are providing premium credits or refunds back to their customers. Use this resource to see if your insurance policies will be eligible for a credit refund. In most cases, the insurance provider will apply the refund directly back to the billing account, with no further action required.

CSAA Insurance Group is extending its premium refund to auto policyholders. There will be a 10% premium refund through June 30.

April 13, 2020 – CSAA Insurance Group is providing a 20% premium refund to auto policyholders. Members with an active policy as of April 30 will receive a 20% refund for two months of auto premiums. Members do not need to take any action to receive their refund, and they can expect to receive it by May 31.

MAPFRE Insurance will return 15% of April and May premium to personal auto policyholders. Additional benefits include:

  • Premium payment flexibility
  • Extended coverage at no cost for customers whose job responsibilities now include specific job-related deliveries during this crisis

Active MetLife Auto customers who are paid to date will receive a 15% credit for April and May based on their monthly premiums. MetLife Auto & Home® will not cancel policies due to non-payment through July 1, 2020. They are also extending coverage under all personal auto insurance programs at no additional charge while customers are making deliveries in response to the crisis, effective March 20, 2020, through May 1, 2020.

Progressive personal auto customers who have a policy in force as of April 30 will be credited 20% of their April premiums in May, and personal auto customers with a policy in force as of May 31 will be credited 20% of their May premiums in June.

If a customer already paid in full, we’ll return the money to the payment account we have on file.

Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15% refund of two months of their annual auto premium as of April 7, 2020. Late fee charges have been automatically stopped and cancellations due to non-payment have been temporarily paused for personal auto and home customers from March 23 through at least May 22, 2020.

Travelers will extend their premium credit, giving customers a 15% credit on their June auto premiums.

April 13, 2020 – Travelers will automatically give U.S. personal auto insurance customers a 15% credit on their April and May premiums. Additionally, Travelers is suspending cancellation and nonrenewal of coverage through May 15 – there will be no interest, late fees or penalties charged during this time.

Travel Insurance – Does it cover COVID-19 disruptions?

Coverage options can vary widely. If you purchased travel insurance before the coronavirus was recognized as an epidemic, your policy likely provides at least some level of protection. Customers who purchased “cancel anytime” or “cancel for any reason” insurance prior to February 3, when COVID-19 was recognized as an epidemic, or soon thereafter may be able to cancel their trip and receive reimbursement for a portion of their non-refundable travel deposits.

Travel insurance generally excludes epidemics and pandemics. If you have a trip already booked, check with your travel providers (cruise line, airline, hotel, etc.) to see what waivers they have put in place. If you are planning a trip, also check with travel providers to understand their coronavirus-related policies and connect with a travel agent. Depending on your situation, there could be some travel insurance options for your needs.
