BOISE – When you’re trying to hit the road for a summer vacation or a quick weekend getaway, you may have the potential for an overheating car. AAA is sharing tips to help you beat the heat.
“An overheated engine can damage moving parts, and may even warp the engine block, causing oil leaks and other issues,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Just like with the human body, too much heat can take a car out of commission.”
AAA’s tips for overheating cars
- Have your cooling system checked before your trip. Make sure fluid levels are topped off and hoses are in good condition.
- Keep a close eye on your temperature gauge. Anything above the ¾ mark is a sign of trouble.
- Pull over immediately if you see steam or hear hissing. Carefully raise your hood to alert other drivers, and get to a safe distance in the event of a vehicle fire.
- Keep a gallon or two of water in your vehicle to top off your radiator, and for people or pets.
- NEVER remove a hot radiator cap. Wait AT LEAST 20 minutes.
- Keep an old towel or blanket handy in case you have to kneel on asphalt to check a tire or look under your vehicle.
“If you’re carrying a full load of passengers and luggage, your car is working overtime. Be especially mindful when driving in hilly and mountainous areas, where the engine is under more strain,” Conde said. “If necessary, turn on the heat to pull heat off the engine block. That may help you reach a safer stopping point.”
