BOISE – As drivers brave the elements to complete errands or to commute to and from work, AAA reminds you to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road.

Negative impacts of freezing weather include the following:

  • Door locks and rubber seals may freeze shut.
  • Tires may become underinflated, affecting handling and traction.  On average, tire pressure decreases by 1 pound per square inch for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops.
  • The battery may struggle to produce enough output to start the car, especially if the battery is three years old or older.
  • Wax in diesel fuel may crystallize, clogging the fuel line.
  • Engine fluids may thicken or even freeze, impacting engine performance.

To fight the freeze:

  • Top off engine fluids.  If you regularly go to the same oil change place, they may offer a complimentary ‘top-off’ policy.  Consider switching to a washer fluid with de-icing properties.
  • Treat doors that freeze with a silicon spray.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Check your tire pressure regularly.
  • Use heated seats to reduce the work your vehicle must do to heat the cabin.
  • Have your battery tested if it’s three years old or older.
