BOISE – As Hurricane Milton barrels toward the Florida Peninsula, AAA is sharing important travel information for those who may be heading into the area.
With significant flooding and extreme windspeeds expected along Milton’s path, travelers and residents are encouraged to promptly heed any evacuation orders given.
Tampa International Airport closed earlier this morning, St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport is closing with the last flight this evening, and Orlando International Airport is closing Wednesday morning. Disney, Universal, and Sea World have all announced closures of Orlando theme parks on Wednesday and Thursday.
“As with any travel, it’s important to download the airline app for the latest updates on flight changes or cancellations. Airlines are working closely with travelers to find solutions, with many already canceling or waiving fees in the process,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Conditions may change or worsen quickly, and with safety top of mind, please closely monitor weather patterns and road closures in the area.”
AAA travel tips
If your travel plans are affected by Hurricane Milton or another natural disaster:
- Check your travel insurance policy to see what’s covered, including potential reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.
- Contact your hotel or rental car company to discuss availability, alternate arrangements, and possible refunds.
- Keep important documents, medications, toiletries, and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag in case you experience delays reuniting with the rest of your luggage.
- If you booked with a travel agent, call them for additional advice.
Regional gas prices could spike, and supplies could dwindle, as drivers top off their vehicles – potentially causing panic buying. Road closures may also delay gasoline deliveries depending on their severity.
“Please be calm, kind, and courteous throughout this ordeal,” Conde said. “Gather as much information as possible to make good decisions.”
