BOISE – We’ve reached the halfway mark for the 100 Deadliest Days, the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic deaths spike on our nation’s roads. Sadly, Idaho’s highways and byways are already deadlier than they were at this time last year. AAA is urging drivers to help reverse this disturbing trend.
The Idaho Transportation Department recently reported an estimated 49 fatalities have already occurred in the first half of the 100 Deadliest Days, compared with 40 during the same time last year.
“We raise awareness by sharing this information with large groups of people, but it always comes down to individual decision making,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Every year, lives and dreams are cut short by devastating crashes. We can do more to make the roads safer for all.”
AAA asks drivers to:
- Drive at safe speeds, with plenty of following distance.
- Avoid sudden lane changes and aggressive behavior.
- Get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel.
- Ditch the distractions, including cell phone use, and keep your eyes and attention on the road.
- Never drive while impaired.
- Always wear your seat belt.
“Today’s vehicle technology can’t take the place of an engaged driver,” Conde said. “It’s up to each of us to commit to safety and eliminate unacceptable risk. Everyone deserves to reach their destination safely.”
