BOISE – It has been a miserable week at the gas pump for Idaho drivers – the Boise and Lewiston averages for a gallon of regular have now passed the $4 mark, and the state average will likely follow by tomorrow.
According to AAA, today’s average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $3.98, with a startling 14-cent jump overnight. Today’s average is 47 cents higher than a week ago, $1.02 more than a month ago, and 72 more than a year ago.
The national average currently sits at $3.88, which is four cents more than yesterday, 29 cents more than a week ago, 96 cents more than a month ago, and 78 cents more than a year ago.
“Every state in the Union is suffering the same fate – soaring gas prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “With 20% of the global oil supply no longer flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, we continue to see enormous pressure on crude prices and, in turn, gas prices.”
The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is currently trading near $98 per barrel, about $36 more than a month ago and $30 more than a year ago.
According to previous AAA research, 59% of Americans say they will modify their driving habits when pump prices hit $4, and 76% will make changes at the $5 mark.
