BOISE – In response to an announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, crude oil futures markets have dropped by nearly $18 per barrel today.  But for now, Idaho drivers are still feeling the pain when they stop to fill up.

According to AAA, today’s average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the Gem State is $4.32, which is five cents more than a week ago, $1.09 more than a month ago, and 96 cents more than a year ago.

The national average currently sits at $4.16 per gallon – ten cents more than a week ago, 71 cents more than a month ago, and 92 cents more than a year ago.  Today, Idaho ranks 9th in the nation for the most expensive fuel.

“The two-week ceasefire is a signal to the market that crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz may flow through the area unhindered for a period of time,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  “However, it’s too early to tell if there will be a lasting resolution, and even so, we’re stuck with higher gas prices until crude oil prices are consistently lower.”

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is currently trading near $95 per barrel, a nearly $18 drop since the market opened this morning.  Lower crude prices can help apply downward pressure on gas prices.
