BOISE – It was another quiet week at the pump, though warmer weather and a record number of Memorial Day travelers could push prices higher in the coming days.
According to AAA, today’s average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $3.28, about a penny and a half less than a week ago, five cents less than a month ago, and 56 cents less than a year ago.
The national average currently sits at $3.16 per gallon – that’s the same price as a week ago, but three cents less than a month ago and 46 cents less than a year ago.
Idaho again ranks 10th in the country for the most expensive fuel, with regional neighbors Washington ($4.30), Nevada ($3.96), Oregon ($3.93) and Utah ($3.30) paying more while Montana ($3.17), Wyoming ($3.15), and Colorado ($3.13) drivers are paying less.
“With a record 45.1 million Americans expected to travel for Memorial Day, we could be looking at the calm before the storm,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “More than 39 million people will be taking a road trip, not counting the folks that are just commuting to work and running their usual errands. That could push fuel demand higher, and pump prices with it.”
AAA members can use the AAA mobile app to find the cheapest fuel and the location of EV charging stations in the area.
After several days under the $60 mark, the West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is currently trading near $64 per barrel. But the current price is $14 per barrel less than a year ago.
“The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) recently announced plans to increase production again in June,” Conde said. “The additional supply may help offset crude demand, at least in the short term. We’ll have to see how things unfold.”
