BOISE – Idaho drivers had a pleasant surprise when they stopped to fill up this week – gas prices that are actually cheaper than a week ago.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $4.51, which is ten cents less than a week ago and about four cents less than a month ago, but about $1.24 more than a year ago.
The national average currently sits at $4.16 per gallon, which is also ten cents cheaper than a week ago and four cents cheaper than a month ago, but $1.22 more than a year ago. Idaho still ranks 9th in the nation for the most expensive fuel. California dipped back under the $6 mark to $5.89 per gallon, while today’s cheapest fuel can be purchased in Indiana at $3.43 per gallon.
“The crude market has calmed a bit this week, which is helping gas prices fall, and it’s been interesting to see that while pump prices are much higher than a year ago, demand is stable,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “If gas prices fall again this week, we may be able to avoid the demand destruction that was initially feared as we kick off the summer.”
The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is currently trading near $92 per barrel, down from $112 per barrel in early April. But geopolitical tensions remain, including possible conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. If fighting resumes on a large scale, oil prices could climb this week.
