BOISE – Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer road trip season, and AAA is reminding drivers to spruce up their emergency kits before hitting the road.

“We can all take simple steps to be better prepared for the unexpected,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  “If you have some of the essentials on hand, you can greatly improve your odds of a safe and comfortable trip.”

Here are some things to include in your emergency kit:

  • Protein snacks and water
  • A first aid kit – check medications and replace expired items
  • Jumper cables
  • Flares or reflectors
  • Basic tools
  • An old towel in case you have to kneel or lay down on hot asphalt
  • A tarp and rope to create shade
  • Comfortable shoes to hike if necessary
  • Rags, towels, and/or wet wipes
  • A pencil and note pad
  • A cooler with a small supply of any important medications
  • Morale-building items like a deck of cards or a frisbee

“It isn’t just about being prepared for life and death situations – it’s about staying positive if you encounter delays and other unexpected issues,” Conde said.  “If you can cover the basics, you’ll be less likely to panic or feel frustrated – both of which can compromise your decision-making and make the situation worse.”
