BOISE – If you’re one of the millions of Americans planning to watch the Olympics, you may be daydreaming about seeing them in person one day. But for some, attending a large event with big crowds can be daunting. AAA is sharing tips to take the stress out of the occasion.
“Bucket-list vacations are exciting, but because they happen on a grand scale, more planning may be needed to cover all the logistics,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “The good news is that unlike a last-minute concert or playoff game, you have more time to make your arrangements and set in motion a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
First things first – choose the location and weather you prefer. After Paris, the next Olympics are the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy, and then the Summer Games return to Los Angeles in 2028. It’s also important to decide if you’d like to extend your trip by adding more days or by exploring other destinations along the way.
“Flights are released about 11 months out, but tour packages offer more of an all-inclusive vacation. An experienced travel agent can help you make the necessary reservations, including lodging,” Conde said. “And protecting your investment with travel insurance is absolutely essential in case you’re confronted with a medical emergency or trip interruption.”
If you plan to travel internationally, apply for your passport well in advance, and reach out to AAA about getting an International Driving Permit if you intend to get behind the wheel.
In addition to visiting with a travel agent, AAA’s Trip Canvas and digital TourBooks can help you start dreaming about your next adventure. You can also download the AAA Mobile App, which can be used to request roadside assistance, book a hotel, and find EV charging stations and the cheapest fuel near you.
AAA’s tips for navigating large crowds
- Investigate VIP parking, rideshare, and mass transit options to quickly enter and exit.
- Take a group photo so you can quickly share what everyone is wearing and looks like.
- Select a prominent rendezvous point in case you get separated.
- If possible, reserve a hotel room within walking distance of the event or venue.
- Use a security wallet or RFID blocking device to protect your valuables. A belt or neck wallet is ideal for storing important documents and extra cash.
- Use matching hats or shirts to easily identify other members of your group.
