BOISE – Drive over a hill or around the bend in a remote corner of Idaho these days, and you just might find yourself in the middle of a massive swarm of crickets. Because it can be a common occurrence this time of year, AAA is sharing tips to keep you and your vehicle safely on the go.
“It’s an impressive sight, to say the least. But thousands upon thousands of crickets scampering about on the road can be a little disconcerting,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to navigate both the swarm itself and the aftermath.”
AAA tips for crickets and cicadas
- Top off your washer fluid reservoir before hitting the road, and make sure wiper blades are in good condition.
- Wash your car and apply wax to protect it from the acidity produced by squished bugs.
- Periodically check your air filter (under the hood) and cabin air filter (inside the vehicle) for clogs and debris.
- Monitor your temperature gauge – if the reading is higher than normal, check your engine for any blockages, including insects.
- If you encounter a swarm, expect the road to be slick in places. Please slow down and avoid sharp turns and sudden acceleration and braking.
