BOISE – (July 7, 2026) – Americans have many ways to stay on the move, but passenger vehicles are still the number one way most people get from point A to point B.  Cars are frequently stolen and vandalized, a concern highlighted by July’s National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.

According to NHTSA, a vehicle was stolen every 48 seconds nationwide in 2025.  That’s more than 650,000 cars in a year, with a sharp increase throughout the summer.  Even more alarming – only about half are recovered in working condition.  AAA shares tips to help keep your vehicle safe.

“Thieves are very skilled – whether they’re cutting out the catalytic converter or pulling the radio, the wheels or the air bags, they know how to work quickly and quietly,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  “You want to make your car a very unappealing target.”

Vehicles are sometimes stolen by organized groups who strip and sell parts, including doors, engines, and transmissions.  Others smash windows and take laptops, cell phones, and purses.

Protecting your ride

  • Park your car in your garage if possible, or well-lit areas.
  • Keep keys and key fobs away from the vehicle.
  • Keep valuables hidden from view.
  • Use aftermarket deterrents such as steering-wheel locks or anti-theft ignition switches.
  • Consider installing motion cameras and additional lighting if needed.
  • Have your VIN number laser engraved on your catalytic converter.
  • Carry comprehensive insurance coverage to guard against loss from theft or vandalism.

“Prevent crimes of opportunity.  As hot as it is right now, some people are tempted to leave their vehicles running while they go into the store – and thieves know that,” Conde said.  “It would be a mistake to think that it can’t happen to you.  A quick errand is not worth the drawn-out process of a police report and an expensive insurance claim.” AAA advises victims of vehicle theft to immediately call the police, as a police report will be required by most insurance companies.
