BOISE – In previous AAA research, 60% of the people who had transported a live Christmas tree had it fall off or out of their vehicle at some point. AAA is sharing important tips as you select and safely return home with the perfect tree.
- Use the right vehicle for the job – a truck with a roof rack, a pickup truck with a longer bed, or a minivan with the back seats removed (note: never travel with more people than you have seats and seat belts!)
- For safety, flag the end of the tree if it hangs away from your vehicle.
- If you’re tying the tree to your vehicle’s roof, secure it with the trunk facing forward. Use strong rope or bungee cords to tie it down at the top, bottom, and middle, then tug from different angles to make sure it’s secure.
- Ask the tree lot to net the tree to prevent branches from being damaged or creating wind resistance as you travel home.
- Take the back roads to go at slower speeds.
- Use a tarp or blanket to protect your vehicle from being scratched or dented.
- Once the tree is in your home, keep it hydrated to reduce the risk of fire.
“December is also Impaired Driving Prevention Month. With so many opportunities to celebrate with friends, family, and co-workers, it’s really important to do so with safety and responsibility in mind,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Please ensure that everyone has a safe ride home and, if necessary, a plan that avoids driving altogether.”
