Columbia rain jacket couple.

The onset of spring may have you thinking about sprouting flowers and blossoming trees, but here in the Pacific Northwest spring means mainly one thing: even more rain. When that rain comes at you horizontally instead of vertically, an umbrella just isn’t going to cut it- you need a good rain jacket. Here are some suggestions to look for in your slicker:

Okay, this may be a no-brainer,  it’s good to remember that your winter coat won’t always work as your raincoat. Just because it’s warm and blocks the wind, doesn’t mean it can block the rain. Look for a jacket that is “waterproof,” not just water-resistant.

Nothing makes you feel quite as cold as a sopping wet head (except for sopping wet feet). A stow-away hood means, in little rainstorms when you feel you don’t need it, your hood isn’t turning into a portable lake on your back.

The weather is changeable. If you aren’t enjoying it, just wait five minutes, it will change. A raincoat that packs down into a small package can fit into your day bag, and be available  when the weather suddenly goes from sunny to storming.
