PORTLAND, Ore., – More consumers are interested in electric vehicles but the higher price of new EVs can be a roadblock. AAA is out with its Used EV Buyer’s Guide for those who want an EV but need more affordable options.
The AAA Used EV Buyer’s Guide includes information such as ownership costs of EVs, range, charging, repair and maintenance costs, and other details to consider before purchase.
The new AAA Used EV Buyer’s Guide and the The AAA Car Guide help consumers navigate the changing automotive marketplace by providing reviews of the newest vehicles available for sale, including EVs and alternative fuel vehicles
Last summer’s AAA survey revealed that one-quarter of Americans said they would be likely to buy an electric vehicle (powered exclusively by electricity, not a hybrid or plug-in hybrid) for their next auto purchase, with Millennials and Gen Z leading the way. About 25% of consumers interested in EVs say they would purchase used, with Millennials (32%) the most likely to consider this option.
Many consumers like the idea of going electric – but worry they will face a steep price tag for a new EV. A used EV may be a more feasible option for buyers concerned about cost or those looking to add a second car to their household.
“If you’re thinking about going electric for your next vehicle, AAA wants you to be informed and educated on EV ownership before you lease or purchase a vehicle. This will help you have a positive experience and get the vehicle that’s right for you,” says Marie Dodds, public affairs director for AAA Oregon/Idaho. “For first-time buyers or multi-car households, used EVs could be a good option as they tend to be more affordable than new EVs.”
The AAA Used EV Buyer’s Guide includes:
- Basic background of EVs
- Driving range and charging
- Used EV ownership cost comparisons (battery versus gas-powered)
- Repair and maintenance costs
- Additional AAA Car Buying Resources
In addition to the newly released guide, AAA has other resources to help buyers navigate the car-buying decision. The 2022 AAA Your Driving Cost analysis revealed that EVs have the second lowest annual ownership costs behind small sedans. They are least expensive for fuel and maintenance, repair and tire costs compared to their gas-powered counterparts. In fact, for consumers looking to save significantly on fuel costs – EV owners save $8,000 or more over five years. However, EVs have higher depreciation costs than most other vehicle types.
AAA Oregon/Idaho offers many services for EV drivers, including:
- mobile charging for EVs in Portland and Bend with more cities coming soon.
- EV charging at AAA branch offices across Oregon and in Boise through the ChargePoint app. AAA members get two complimentary hours of charging for their electric vehicles.
